Background

The Vietnam government realized the importance of nutrition following the success of the National Nutrition Strategy.  The government was keen to develop another strategy that would see an improvement in nutrition in Vietnam. The first strategy was developed in 2020 and the review of this strategy informed the development of the second strategy which was to be reviewed for the development of the third one. The development of the third National Nutrition Strategy would help to continue the gains of the second strategy and the continuity of programs.

The request

Given the high level of technical rigor required to support the development of the new NNS, an international consultant was sought with a background in developing national strategies, familiar with the development context in Vietnam.  On behalf of the MoH and NIN, UNICEF, with the support of SUN, requested technical support from the GNC Technical Alliance to identify a suitable candidate to support the development of the strategy. The main role of N4D was to facilitate the technical and governance development of the new NNS in close consultation with government and development partners in Vietnam

Key achievement:

• Developed a brief inception report presenting the methodology, agreed on ways of working, timeline, and any requirements from national consultants.
• Conducted a desk review of up-to-date/valid global/regional targets, policies and strategies, and experiences from other SUN countries
• Developed a 5-page briefing document detailing the nutrition situation in Vietnam, highlighting key outstanding nutrition issues as well as constraints.
• Facilitated the development of a new 10 - year National Nutrition Strategy.
